What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a very common sleep disorder associated with snoring. It is the collapse of the upper airways during sleep after the body has relaxed. This airway closure causes the snoring sounds and a halt to your breathing; sometimes this can happen hundreds of times per night. Sleep apnea is dangerous for your health and can leave you feeling tired throughout the day.
- 48% of adults report snoring at night
- 38% of adults have fallen asleep unintentionally during the day
Many people who have sleep apnea don’t actually know they have the condition, but excessive snoring is a symptom. Around 40 million Americans suffer from this problem, and more than 13 million have moderate to severe sleep apnea. Many people would like to stop snoring and have tried snoring remedies without any results.
Luckily, sleep apnea treatment is available—and there are snoring remedies that work. Dr. David Wagner offers treatment that takes advantage of a special sleep apnea mouthpiece to help bring snoring or sleep apnea relief to our patients.
Treatments: Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
Dr. Wagner uses proven, custom fabricated mandibular advancement devices (MADs) that guide the lower jaw forward, increasing the size of the airway and thereby preventing blockage.
Whereas CPAP therapy is commonly used to treat sleep apnea, we offer medically approved dental devices that make great CPAP alternatives for many people. This sleep apnea mouthpiece is less invasive than CPAP machines, doesn’t require electricity. It is more discreet, easily portable due to its small size. It is also considered a medical device that is covered by most health insurance plans as well.
Dr, Wagner and his experienced team at Northwood Dental is equipped to see if an anti-snoring mouthpiece would help you address your sleep apnea without the use of a CPAP device.
Common snoring and sleep disorder symptoms include:
- Loud, constant, or explosive snoring
- Waking up gasping for air during sleep
- Breathing stops for several seconds during sleep
- Waking up tired, or persistent fatigue
- Daytime sleepiness
- Memory and concentration problems
- Teeth grinding and acid reflux
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, it is important to seek treatment right away. Without treatment, the disease can cause a number of serious health issues, including high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, and decreased concentration. The fatigue associated with sleep apnea can be a cause of performance issues at work or exhaustion while driving, and may even negatively affect relationships. In children and teens, sleep apnea is a potential cause for poor performance in school and other activities.
